School Budget to Board of Supervisors

It's been a busy couple of days with school related work. Last night the School Board approved our budget that will be presented to the Board of Supervisors. We approved the budget with a full step increase on employee salary scales plus a 1% COLA that will be used to continue to meet the state mandate of 5% VRS contribution. The budget as approved will meet the goals and priorities set by the school board.

The budget will go on to the Board of Supervisors, which will have the difficult decisions as to how much they will provide in funding as well with all the other priorities of the county. I don't expect the proposed school budget will be fully funded, as we are competing with all of the other needs of departments in the county.

Once the BOS decides how much they will transfer to the schools we will then make the final decisions on how the money willdownload.jpg be spent. Employee salary enhancements are certainly a priority, but with limited funding we will have to make tough decision on programs within the school division if we want to keep the priority of a step increase for employees.

I quickly learned this year the budget process is a difficult and frustrating process. It's frustrating in that as a governing body you are trying to ensure needs are met and stakeholder concerns are addressed. Unfortunately we aren't always able to meet all the needs and address all the concern.

On happier notes today Dr. Bruce Benson was sworn in as the Superintendent of Stafford County Schools. I do hope Dr. Benson can help our School Board find our compass and move us in a direction of continuous improvement. I was also able to visit Drew Middle School today. As one of the oldest school buildings in the county, Dr. Hanna and her team at Drew ensure the students there achieve just as much as students in our newest schools.
