First Meeting Wrap-up

Last night was the first meeting of the year for the Stafford County School Board and my first meeting as a member.   We elected Nanette Kidby as our Chair.   I nominated and voted in favor of Nanette because I do believe she is the right person to lead the board.   In talking with her prior to the meeting she expressed her desire to set goals for the board and make sure we are working towards making significant accomplishments for the school system this year.  I look forward to the coming year with the board under Nanette’s leadership.

The School Board, functionally, is similar to the Planning Commission, which I served on for the last four years.  Both use Robert’s Rules of Order and have only a few procedure by-laws that make any changes to Robert’s Rules.  So adjusting to serving on the School Board is really just getting used to the environment of the School Board Chambers.  It was good to have an audience for most of the meeting.  With the Planning Commission we were often operated in a fairly empty room.  I will say the Board of Supervisors Chambers, where the Planning Commission meets does have a larger dais.  Sorry to my fellow board members for when my papers, etc. invade your space.

Last night we had the opportunity to honor 14 teachers throughout the county that received a $500/each grant from the Stafford Education Foundation and Stafford County’s Blue Ribbon Committee for the 350 Anniversary of Stafford County.  The teachers will use these grants to work on projects with their students related to Stafford County’s history.

School Board members were also assigned to committees, both standing committee’s of the board and representatives to advisory committees.   I was appointed to the board’s Finance and Budget committee.  I am looking forward to working with the Board of Supervisors in developing the school budget.

The remainder of the agenda consisted of information items of things that will come before us for action at future meetings.  One of the agenda items was the CIP (Capital Improvement Plan).  I was happy the board indulged the new members and approved us holding a work session on January 28th to review the CIP again before we take action on it.

We are off and running for 2014 on the School Board.  I look forward to the coming year and working on making improvements to the school system with my fellow board members and the new Superintendent.
