Email: Snow Days Make-Up Strategy

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I wanted to give you a quick update on the decision the School Board made regarding making up missed time due to inclement weather.

First I want to thank many of you for reaching out and sharing your opinion with me on how we should make up for the lost days.  Most folks had the same concerns about not wanting to have to use Spring Break or Saturdays.  I shared those concerns and was ready to argue on why we should not go that route.  Fortunately in the end we were able to develop a strategy that made very few changes to the school calendar.

Our school administration staff and the calendar committee was able to find ways, using our already banked time and state code to avoid using Saturdays, Spring Break or extending the school day.  Under the plan approved by the School Board the school year will still end on June 13th.   School will be in session on previously planned teacher work day of April 4th and April 18th and May 23rd will be full school days rather than the previously planned half days.   Also elementary schools will have full days on June 11th and 12th.   With this plan families are able to continue with vacations as planned for Spring Break and summer and students will not have to spend the extra 20 minutes in school to make up time.  I do want to say "thank you" to our teachers as the one down side of this plan is they do lose planning time.

In other news Supervisor Meg Bohmke and I recently toured Grafton Village Elementary which is currently under construction being renovated and the rebuild site of Stafford High School.  Both projects are progressing on schedule.  However, the Grafton psmall.jpgroject has been slowed a little due to weather, but the on-site project manager assured us the school will be completed on schedule and ready for students for the next school year.  The Stafford High School rebuild is starting to take shape.  The first sections of the steel frame have been constructed and concrete is being poured.  We stood on the concrete slab that will be the foundation of the new gym floor.  I am really looking froward to cheering on the Indian basketball teams and other sports in that new gym.   The school is on schedule to open for the 2015-2016 School Year.

Thank you again for all of you that reached out shared your opinions on the snow day make up time.   Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or thoughts you would like to share.

Thank you,
